Ethel Dayberry Huff always loved radio. As a young girl, she remembers lying on the floor with her ear next to the old console radio in her family home. She loved the stories; she loved the music. Throughout her life, whenever there was an opportunity to hear Christian radio, music, or preaching…she was listening. She was the life-long partner of Rev. Gene Huff and stood by him in every ministry endeavor, but she was even more involved and interested in Christian radio than he was. Nearly 25 years ago, when an opportunity became available to establish a radio station in London, Kentucky, Gene and Ethel made the life-changing decision to file for a license.
The owner was Ethel Dayberry Huff. Although he was general manager and absolutely involved in every aspect of the business, she was and is the actual owner. From the beginning, Ethel has been vitally involved in the ministry of WYGE. Until the past two years, when Gene’s health deteriorated, she reviewed and approved all the music played on the station. She also has been very “hands-on” in decisions regarding programming and scheduling. On December 8, 2011, the love of her life and her ministry partner was promoted to heaven. Ethel hopes more than ever that the work that she and Gene established and built would continue to grow and accomplish even more for the Kingdom of God.
More than a decade ago, nearly half the ownership of the station was transferred to the five Huff Children, and WYGE Christian Radio became a true family business, although Ethel Huff remains the managing member of the corporation. Ethel Huff Broadcasting, LLC, doing business as WYGE Christian Radio, continues to be a thriving family-owned business, but most of all is a family ministry.
